There’s a lot of pressure on new business owners. In order to get anywhere with your new venture, it feels like you have to be skilled at every single thing your company needs.
Combine this with a worry that you’re not going to be productive, or able to achieve, if you’re not doing something at all times and it’s no wonder so many solopreneurs live with burnout!
But does a business owner who’s leading from the front alone really need to be a ‘jack of all trades’? We don’t think so, and the points below are only a few of the reasons why.

Focus on Developing the One Skill That Makes You Successful
Even a jack of all trades does some things better than others. The key here is to lock down the skill you have a natural edge in that also helps you to be successful.
This might take a little bit of soulsearching, but the main thing to think about is the reason you were attracted to running your own business in the first place. What skills did you hold that made it feel like a good career path for you?
Maybe it was a natural sense of charisma that made public speaking a breeze? Maybe it’s your talent for the written word, and conveying a complicated message simply and clearly? Identify the skill in question and then work on that one thing alone!
Requiring Help Doesn’t Mean Needing Employees
You’ve got rather a small budget for anything at the moment, and that means hiring someone as a full or even part time employee is out of the question. As such, you’re toiling away 24/7 to try and get things done to the best of your abilities.
But you don’t need to have permanent staff in order to get some help. You can easily outsource your business’ needs to pay as you go services, or hire a freelancer to work as and when.
You can head to Google right now and find an accountant to take care of your tax returns, or a social media designer who can create 1-2 personable, properly branded posts per week for you.
Neither of these professionals need to be paid in the long term, and that can make both your time and your startup budget go a lot further.
You Need More Life and Less Work
A work/life balance doesn’t mean living around your work. It also doesn’t mean fitting work into every free moment that crops up in your life. That simply isn’t balanced.
Working shouldn’t take up all your time, and that’s what being a jack of all trades demands of you. You deserve to have just as much time to yourself, and preferably more!
When a business owner starts to feel like they have to be good at everything, the stress of trying to carve out your career will pile on heavy. Remember the reasons above and then take a good step back!
