Why Ignoring Product Packaging Costs More Than You Initially Think

If you have a business to run and you’re ambitious, you’ll want every aspect of it to be near-perfect. You’ll never get everything 100% perfect, but this kind of standard will stand you in good stead. Even the smallest factors will have a significant part to play in terms of business growth over the years. Product packaging is something that should be looked into if you want to impress people and build your brand, for instance.

Every aspect of your brand should be relevant and attractive. Packaging quietly says a lot about you and your business. It shows competence, confidence, and the fact that you listen to customers/clients. Ignoring something as crucial as this can be very costly. Here are a few specific reasons why:

Shelf Presence As An Indirect Salesman

You probably don’t even notice this kind of thing taking place, but your product’s packaging acts like a silent salesman when it is on a shelf next to dozens of competitors. The way in which you package your product will convince people whether they should notice long enough to care — and eventually invest. A strong visual presence will naturally draw the eye and convince people to engage with your brand.

    Cheap Options Signal Low-Quality Work

This is something that you have probably experienced before yourself. When you feel as though something has been made cheaply, it makes you feel as though the entire company is somewhat cheap and of low quality. You can’t help but think this, even if it feels a little harsh. If you choose to invest very little in packaging, people will notice right away and make up their mind — even if it is subconsciously. Not everything has to be magnificent right away, but you must avoid tacky and low-quality packaging options. Once even a shred of doubt comes into customers’ minds, it’s hard to convince them that you are a business shrouded in great quality.

The Unboxing Process Is Just As Exciting

While receiving and using the new product is the entire point, unboxing the item has its own rewarding qualities. There is something fun about the anticipation we feel as we unbox beautiful packaging. So, it’s up to you to ensure the big reveal is done in a wonderful and functional manner in order to keep the excitement levels high. The positive emotions associated with unboxing will stay in the mind just as much as anything else. People might even find the fancy packaging even more impressive if you get it right.

Presentation That Encourages Positive Word Of Mouth

Word-of-mouth is one of the most valuable marketing tactics because it involves little to no work on your end. If you do your job properly, people will talk about what you can provide. You will obviously invest plenty of money in certain marketing strategies, but word-of-mouth trumps most campaigns. With high-quality packaging, people will be immediately impressed and will happily tell others about what they received. In this day and age, people will post your product (and packaging) on social media platforms and even video-sharing websites. You might experience the complete opposite effect if your packaging is below par. People will be immediately turned off and will not exactly be excited by what their items arrive in.

Affecting Brand Trust With Environmental Choices

People don’t just want your products; they want to know about the way in which you work. Sure, some people won’t care either way, but the majority need to know about your values and ethics. So many buyers look at packaging as a reflection of the values you hold. Using sustainable packaging, for instance, can show everyone that you value responsibility as well as quality. This kind of signal builds a mutual respect that quietly shines over the years. Customers will feel better about using your brand throughout that time.

    Customer Friction

When you think about the best products you’ve ever received, the chances are that they weren’t just attractive in their housing. They likely were easy to open and were simple to store. If you don’t take these two things into account, you might create tiny annoyances that eventually add up. Strangely, it doesn’t matter how lovely the product is sometimes. If people are frustrated by the packaging, they might associate you with this experience only. It’s a good idea to ensure that packaging is high-quality simply to avoid this kind of mess. If everything is comfortable for them, it will be another green flag for them to associate with you. Your brand will be remembered fondly, and customers would rather buy from you again than look for alternatives.

    Brand Recognition Through Consistency

If your product packaging is designed beautifully and consists of your brand, people will be more likely to recognise you over the years. You don’t have to aimlessly slap your logo on every single blank space, but it’s worth designing things with your brand in mind. New customers will have something to hold onto subconsciously, and returning customers will know who you are right away. Without a real sense of consistency on your packaging, people have to really think in order to understand who they have bought from. Your brand will feel more scattered, and this can be a problem if you are trying to foster loyalty over the course of the forthcoming years.

    Long-Term Costs vs Short-Term Savings

You might think that investing very little in your packaging will be the correct play, but there’s a lot more to it than that. While you will save a decent chunk initially, it’s also a massive risk in the grand scheme of things. It cannot be something that continues as you look to grow and scale effectively. Cutting corners will create hidden costs further down the line in terms of returns, damaged goods, and even customers not coming back. Sub-par packaging will lead to complaints and a complete lack of trust. You can avoid long-term expenses by investing a little more in packaging early on.
