Create A Safe Environment
The first thing that you’re going to need to do is create a safe environment for your employees. They deserve to feel safe and respected in the workplace, and it’s down to you to ensure that you are providing that for them. For example, you need to have an area where smoking and vapes are allowed, but they should not be allowed indoors.
You also need to make sure that you have and enforce a zero tolerance policy when it comes to any form of bullying or discrimination. We understand that this can be difficult to do, but we promise that it’s worth it. It’s important that you ensure zero tolerance, as nobody deserves to be attacked for who they are.
Offer Support When Needed
The next thing that you should be doing is offering them support when needed. Offering support to your staff should not be an inconvenience to you, it should be a given. You need to make sure that you are offering them the support they need, when they need it, whether that means directly from you, or from someone else.
We know that you have your own things to do, but at the end of the day you are all supposed to be a team, and a team helps each other when things aren’t going quite right.
Train Them Well
Finally, you need to ensure that you are training them well, as this will support their development going forward. We know that some companies are hesitant because they believe that they might be wasting their time training someone who is simply going to leave in the future, but you can’t look at it this way.
Also, you tend to find that people stay where they feel valued and appreciated, so as long as you’re making them feel this, that’s what matters.
Hopefully, you have found this article helpful, and now see some of the things that you should be doing to support your employees going forward. While we know that it’s hard, you still need to ensure that you’re doing everything you can here, for all of them. If you don’t, this is when you’re going to run into issues as your employees are going to feel like you don’t care about them, and start seeking employment elsewhere.
