    Have a Plan

For many of us, having a plan in place, even for the hardest things such as the loss of a beloved pet, can make things a little easier. For example, you may decide that when they are in obvious pain or have an incurable condition, you will choose to put them to sleep so they do not have to suffer. It can also help to plan the small things, such as allowing yourself to take some time off work to be with them, and then grieve.

    Invest in Insurance

It can also be helpful to invest in insurance. This is because good insurance will cover things such as end-of-life care. In this way, you can make sure that your pet gets the best care possible. It also means you can exhaust as many treatments as you want before making the decision to let them go.

    Choose Home Vet Care

Another way you can make things easier on both you and your pet is by choosing home vet care. Providers like Veteris’ 24-7 vet services offer home care and euthanasia. This means you can allow your pet to pass quietly and comfortably in the home that they have known all their life. Indeed, such care is often much less stressful for your pet and for their human.

    Allow Yourself to Grieve

In the West, we often have a strange approach to grief, and that is when it comes to human losses. This can make a pet loss seem like a small thing. But it is certainly not. In fact, when we think of all the wonderful benefits that our pets bring into our lives, it’s clear that the loss of a pet is a significant one. Indeed, in some ways, our love for our pets can be so much more uncomplicated and pure than the love we have for the people in our lives.

That is why it’s crucially important that when we lose a pet, we truly allow ourselves to grieve. Yes, you can cry tears over the loss of your pet. These tears do not need to stop after a day or a week, either. Remember, grief is a process, and everyone experiences it differently, so be sure to give yourself some emotional space to do so. You may even wish to consider grief counselling, as having a place where you can talk openly about your feelings can be incredibly healing.

    Honour Their Memory

Last of all, to make things just a little easier when your pet passes, take some time to honour them. What this will look like depends on you, of course, but you may choose to display a framed photo of your late pet in your home. Many people also request the cremains of their pets to keep in urns in their homes. While others have their ashes suspended in resin hearts so they can take a piece of them with them wherever they go.
