Managing Cost of Living in 2026: Four Ways to Free up Some Cash

Two things are most certainly the case for you at this moment in time: every day life is getting more expensive, and with each passing year, you accumulate more stuff you don’t really use. While these two things should juxtapose each other, it never really works out that way.

Thankfully, there’s a simple solution that helps both problems – sell the stuff you don’t need so you can better afford things you do. The internet brings with it dozens of unique ways to sell your old or disused belongings, and there’s so much choice out there that it can actually become a bit overwhelming.

If you’ve got a lot of stuff to get rid of but you don’t really know where to start, this article is for you. Here are four options for downsizing your life and freeing up some extra cash.

    1. Perform a Thorough Declutter

The first thing anyone with this goal in mind should do is perform a thorough declutter. This process extends beyond regular cleaning – it’s about sorting through your home room by room and scrutinising each item to determine whether it needs to go or stay.

The best way to do it is to get yourself four boxes and label them Keep, Sell, Donate, and Rubbish, respectively. Once you’ve filled each box to the brim, it’s time to act on your categorisation before repeating the process. For stuff you’re selling, you can try eBay, Vinted, Gumtree, or a carboot sale, depending on the value and type of items you’re selling.

Having gone through this for each room, you should have made significant headway.

    2. Sell Unused Vehicles

It’s very common for people to have more than one car these days, and it’s also common that the second or third vehicle remains relatively unused. A car that’s sat on the driveway for the majority of the year is just a waste of space, and you may as well sell it to free up some cash (as well as the space on your drive). As you’ll know, even a stationary vehicle still costs money to maintain, so it’s best to take action.

The same goes for caravans. Many people will purchase one of these with the intention of using it regularly, but then the time never comes. You can sell your caravan with relative ease these days, so be sure to get yourself a free valuation.

    3. Sell Unused Hobby Equipment

Passion for a hobby isn’t guaranteed to last forever, or you may find that you spend money on expensive equipment, but then discover that you’re not as interested as you thought you would be or that you don’t really have the time.

In these instances, the gear usually gets relegated to the back of the garage or the loft, where it sits for years, unused and entirely forgotten about.

Even if you won’t be engaging with the hobby, you could give others a great deal who are just getting started by putting your stuff on eBay. You could clear a significant amount of space this way and receive a nice little sum in your account for relatively little effort.

    4. Reevaluate Your Subscriptions

One of the worst offenders for repeatedly draining your bank balance is a subscription you don’t use, or even worse than that, several subscriptions (which is increasingly common).

Whether it’s for streaming services, music listening platforms, food-based deliveries, or something else, most people have at least two monthly payments like this coming out, and they can add up to make for a significant dent in monthly wages. This is especially the case if your partner also has their own subscriptions and you’re sharing an account.

Thoroughly reevaluate what you’re paying for to determine if you really need a given subscription. Even if you’re looking at something you use regularly, like Netflix, it’s important to remember that these services operate on a tiered system, and there will be multiple different versions of the same subscription that offer varying degrees of accessibility. It may be that you’re able to afford a lower tier, which can mean the inclusion of ads or a lower resolution for video streaming platforms.

    Wrapping Up

Hopefully, you now feel you have a better idea of how to manage your cost of living sustainably and free up a little cash in the process. There are plenty more steps you can take, of course, but this is a start, and with a matter like this, hopping that first hurdle is often the most difficult part. Good luck!
