How To Decide On A Business Name

There is a lot that goes into creating and starting a new business, and the truth is, it might be a lot more than you realize. If you’re keen to launch your own company, there are many different things you’ll need to consider, but one of the first – perhaps even the first – is your business name. Without this, you can’t really do much else; you can’t design a website, you can’t create any branding, and you can’t start advertising.

The idea of a business name might not be too tricky for you. However, you do need to ensure that you get it right. It needs to be something catchy and interesting that helps people know what you do and is also memorable. Since it will be on all your branding, it has to make sense and be part of your overall design. The right business name is actually crucial, and it can make a big difference to your success. So don’t rush into choosing something; take your time. If you’re stuck, here are some ideas to help you.

A man thinking.

Don’t Be Too Similar To Another Company

While you’re trying to come up with a unique name, keep an eye out for competitors who are already using names that sound like the one you want. Avoid giving your business a name that could be confused with another business in your area that does the same thing.

At worst, the other business could say that you are violating their trademark, and you could end up in court. But even if that doesn’t happen, you still want your business to have its own brand and identity. Being confused with a competitor is rarely a good thing.

Make Sure People Can Spell And Pronounce It

Long, complicated, or unusual names can be frustrating for an individual, but it could be disastrous for a company. Keep your language straightforward and easy to remember by avoiding ‘clever’ spellings and unfamiliar acronyms.

If people aren’t even sure how to pronounce your business name, let alone spell it, how will they be able to tell others about you? How will they remember you? How will they search for you online? The answer is they won’t, and they’ll go to another business they can pronounce and spell.

Make It Web-Friendly

Your business will probably have a website and a Facebook page. Your business might also use other social media sites. Do some research to see if you can get a domain name that matches the name of your business and social media accounts in your own name. Once everything matches, it will be more web-friendly (easier to find) and less confusing. Plus, it will be simpler to register company name with the proper legal authorities.

The best domain names are short and easy to remember. You might like how a name with an unusual spelling or a long name sounds, but it can make it harder for potential customers to find you online or write your name correctly in an email.
