We do a lot of things well here in the UK, and comedy has to be one of them. From our dry wit to our sharp observations, we certainly know how to have fun and, unsurprisingly, there are some amazing comedians and comedy venues amongst us. In fact, there’s so much choice if you’re just starting to explore UK comedy that you might not have the first clue where to start.
Luckily, there are great comedy spots countywide, and we’re going to consider precisely which UK cities are the funniest. So, sit down, strap in, and get ready to laugh!
# 1 – London
It may seem cliché, but London is most definitely the UK’s comedy hub from sheer numbers alone. Seriously, there are more comedians to hire here than anywhere else in the UK. There are also a whole load more venues, including the iconic Comedy Store, which has played a role in the careers of comedians from Jimmy Carr to Izzard and beyond.
Other top comedy spots include The Top Secret Comedy Club, which has hosted comedians including Amy Schumer, Jason Manford, and Rob Beckett across its two London locations. Let’s not forget that the UK’s favourite comedy show, ‘Live at the Apollo’, is also filmed in Hammersmith Apollo, which offers by far the most star-studded comedy lineups that the UK has to offer.

# 2 – Edinburgh
Famed for its Fringe festival, which sees the city literally given over to comedy for three weeks every year, Edinburgh is another comedy spot of note. In fact, some people would go as far as to say that this Scottish hotspot has changed the face of British comedy altogether, and we’d be hard pressed to disagree with them. After all, Steve Coogan, Lee Evans, Harry Hill, and many more all got their breaks here.
And, it’s not only festival season that makes this city fun. Year-round Edinburgh comedy spots that are also well worth a visit include Monkey Barrel Comedy, The Comedy Cellar, and The Stand Comedy Club.
# 3 – Glasgow
Sticking with our Scottish theme, Glasgow is also doing a lot for UK comedy, and has its very own International Comedy Festival, which is actually the largest of its kind in Europe! Glasgow humour is especially famed for being upfront, accessible, and down to earth, thanks to comedy stars who have made their names in the city, such as Billy Connolly and Frankie Boyle.
That trend for authentic Glaswegian comedy continues to this day, with rising stars like Stuart Mitchell who, if you enjoy his TikTok style, could easily be the funniest comedian you see live in the UK next year. Other top names to watch out for at clubs like Glasgow’s very own Stand Comedy Club include Desiree Burch, MC Hammersmith, and Amy Mason.
Are these the funniest cities in the UK? It’s hard to say when they’re up against some pretty tough competition, but one thing’s for sure – you’re guaranteed a laugh if you head to any of these comedy hotspots next year!
